The Media Studies Department at Mahatma Gandhi Central University organized a one-day symposium on the topic “Digital Journalism: Possibilities and Challenges” at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay parisar on Monday. The program was presided by the University Chancellor, Prof. Sanjay Shrivastav. Associate Professor Dr. Rachna Sharma from IIMC was the kenote speaker of the program. Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha, the Head of Media Studies Department, welcomed the chief guest.

Dr. Saket Raman, the coordinator of the program, stated during the welcome address that journalism is evolving towards digital platforms. He emphasized the growing significance of digital journalism in India, the second-largest consumer of the internet after China.
Increasing interactive nature of digital platforms through websites, apps, and social media – Dr. Jha
In his keynote address, Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha expressed concerns about the lack of fact-checking in digital journalism, highlighting the challenge of distinguishing between accurate and false information. He pointed out that language degradation is a major issue in digital media and stressed the need to address it. Despite the rise of digital media, Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha, the Head of the Department, mentioned that the importance of electronic and print media has not diminished. He discussed the increasing interactive nature of digital platforms through websites, apps, and social media.
AR and VR in combating fake news and viral content – Dr. Rachna
The Keynote speaker, Dr. Rachna Sharma, highlighted the integration of digital technology in traditional media like print and radio. She exemplified the use of software for typing as a crucial aspect of this convergence. Dr. Sharma emphasized that digital journalism is data-centric and discussed the convenience of information transmission through digital media. Dr. Sharma warned about the spread of misinformation through chat apps and emphasized the significance of fact-checking. She mentioned the importance of platforms like AR and VR in combating fake news and viral content. The event concluded with thanks from student presenters and engaging questions from students, showcasing the active participation of the department’s researchers and students.
