Fourth technical sessions were organized by the Department of Political Science, Mahatma Gandhi Central University in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) on the sixth day of 10-day Research Methodology course.
In the 19th technical session, subject expert Professor Sanjay Kumar, former director of CSDS, New Delhi, gave a detailed lecture on the problems faced in social research. Prof. Kumar said that the research topic should be selected by the researcher according to his/her interest. The researcher should check the veracity of the research hypothesis and not try to prove it to be true through research. Professor Kumar threw light on the problems faced in formulation of research problem, review of literature, formulation of research hypothesis, selection of data collection methods and publication of research articles.
Researchers should imbibe proper knowledge – Pavnesh Kumar
In the presidential address of the session, Professor Pavanesh Kumar, Head, Department of Management Science, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, said that researchers should imbibe proper knowledge. It is necessary that this type of knowledge is communicated to future generations of researchers.
In the 20th technical session, Dr. Kailash Chandra Pradhan, Head, Department of Economics, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, gave a lecture on methods of research and analysis of collected facts through quantitative method in social research. Further, Dr. Pradhan told about the various methods prevalent in the collection of facts, their tabulation and analysis of facts in quantitative research. Along with this, he gave an experimental introduction to the participants on how the various types of uses of the data collected by SPSS can be easily made available.
Systematic research is the only solution to the problems – Dr. Pareek
Chairman of the session, Dr. Vikas Pareek, Head of Department of Computer Science, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, said that it is necessary to be scientific in any kind of research. He told that systematic research is the only solution to the problems.
In the 21st technical session of the course, subject expert Dr. Shiva Kanojia Shukla, Deputy Librarian, Jawaharlal Nehru University explained how indexing and citation database make research easier. Dr. Kanojia told that through such a database, the researcher can study the previously written research articles related to his research field. He gave examples of databases like PubMed, Scopus, etc.
Presiding over the session, Professor Ranjit Kumar Chowdhary, Head, Department of Library and Information, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, said that citation and indexing hold an important place in any research. Their proper knowledge makes research effective and practical. Therefore, having this type of database is very beneficial for researchers and it also improves the quality of research.
Through the focused group discussion, the researcher gets the knowledge of very deep facts about the research topic and the seriousness of the subject matter
In the 22nd technical session of this course, subject expert Professor Tapas Kumar Dalpati, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Central University of Gujarat, threw light on the focussed group discussion used in research. Professor Dalpati told that through focused group discussion for any data collection or field study, fact collection can be made very effective and focused on the research topic. In the presidential address of this session, Dr. Sarita Tiwari, Head, Department of Political Science, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, told that it is most important which method of data collection should be used in the field survey. Through the focused group discussion, the researcher gets the knowledge of very deep facts about the research topic and the seriousness of the subject matter.

The director of this course, Dr. Narendra Kumar Arya, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, said that through the course, the participants were given detailed information about many problems faced in social research and data collection and analysis in quantitative research. Dr. Narendra Singh, co-director of the course, while addressing the gathering, said that in today’s working day, very important things were told to the students on serious topics like citation indexing and focused group discussion and efforts were made to make the complexity of the topics simple for the participants. Ashutosh, Gaurav, Nikhil, Manish, Sarveshwar Ujjwal, Devashis, Sandeep, Richa, Vijay, Kaushal, Sujit, Sachin, Afsana were present in today’s program.
