Education | Republic Day

India officially became a democratic republic on January 26 in 1950 with the adoption of the Constitution. The President of India will raise the National Flag and the 74th Republic Day ceremony at this momentous occasion will begin.

Republic Day is a national holiday in India, celebrated on January 26th each year to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. The Constitution of India came into effect on this day, making India a republic and replacing the Government of India Act 1935. The main Republic Day celebration is held in the national capital, New Delhi, at Rajpath before the President of India. A grand parade is held which is attended by dignitaries from all over the world, along with the general public. The parade starts from the Rashtrapati Bhavan and proceeds towards the India Gate. It includes various floats representing different states of India, showcasing their culture and tradition. The parade also includes various performances by school children, display of various weapons and military tanks and a fly-past by the Indian Air Force.

The President of India unfurls the national flag and the national anthem is played. 21 gun salutes are fired in honor of the occasion. The parade ends with a display of colourful floats, known as tableaux, representing different states and cultural and social organizations. The parade concludes with a display of fireworks.

The celebration of Republic Day is not limited to the national capital, it is celebrated all over the country with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervor. Schools and colleges organize flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs and patriotic songs. In many places, people participate in patriotic rallies and marches. The day is also marked with great patriotic fervor and the national flag is hoisted on all government buildings.

The Republic Day celebration also includes the award of the prestigious Padma awards, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, by the President. The Padma awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. These awards are given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions in different fields such as arts, literature, science, sports, public affairs, social work, and civil service.

In short, Republic Day is a day of national pride and celebration of the diversity and unity of India. It is a day to remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and to reaffirm our commitment to building a strong and prosperous nation. The grand parade and cultural programs showcase the rich cultural heritage of India and the patriotic spirit of its people. It is a day to celebrate the spirit of democracy and the ideals of justice, liberty and equality enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
