Indian Legal Reform: The Department of Media Studies at Mahatma Gandhi Central University organized an online symposium on various dimensions of the Indian Citizenship Security Act – 2023.
The program was presided over by the honorable Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sanjay Srivastava. The chairmanship of the program was led by Prof. Anjani Kumar Jha, Head of the Department of Media Studies.
As keynote speakers, Dr. Sarvesh Kumar Shahi, Senior Assistant Professor at the School of Law, IIT Bhubaneswar, and Dr. Kesharinandan Sharma from the School of Law, Banaras Hindu University, were present.

Dr. Kesharinandan Sharma shed light on the Media and Indian Citizenship Security Act 2023. He commenced his discourse with community service and penal provisions, highlighting the significant initiative to rectify the shortcomings of the IPC.
He explained the benefits of the Indian Citizenship Security Act, Indian Penal Code, and Indian Evidence Act in the field of judicial journalism. Cases related to terrorism are now incorporated into the Indian Legal Code under separate sections. Furthermore, he explained the incorporation of laws related to electronic, digital, and print journalism.

The main speaker, Dr. Sarvesh Kumar Shahi, remarked that the replacement of the Indian Penal Code with the Indian Legal Reform signifies a clear intention. This legal reform will liberate us from laws influenced by 163 years of colonial rule.
He pointed out that the Indian Legal Reform defines the convergence and unity through the term ‘India’. Federal crimes have also been defined within the Indian Legal Reform. Moreover, laws concerning crimes related to electronic communication have been enacted, ensuring a minimum sentence duration. Dr. Shahi also elaborated on the laws and sections related to media within the Indian Legal Reform.
Criminals can also be punished in cyber crimes through the Indian Civil Protection Code 2023 – Dr. Jha
While giving the presidential address, Head of the Department, Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha said that criminals can also be punished in cyber crimes like deepfake through the Indian Civil Protection Code 2023. He said that it is necessary for journalism students to have knowledge of cyber security and media laws. He addressed the students regarding Indian Judicial Code and cyber crime.

Addressing the audience, Dr. Saket Raman, Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of the Media Studies Department, stated that the Indian Citizenship Security Act of 2023 provides independence from laws imposed by British rule through the prism of the legal system. He emphasized the shift from IPC to a new dimension in the legal system.
