Mahatma Gandhi Central University’s Education Studies Department, organized a one-day international webinar commemorating the first death anniversary of American philosopher Nel Noddings. The webinar focused on the theme ‘Nel Noddings’ Care Ethics and Confucian Ethics: A Comparative Study’. Distinguished figures from academia graced the event, including Professor Sanjay Shrivastava, Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Central University, and Dr. Theresa Chi-chen Wang Shei from Providence University, Taiwan, who served as the keynote speaker.

The event commenced with a stirring Saraswati Vandana presentation by Subhprabha Day, followed by the welcoming remarks by Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Head of the Department. The program’s inauguration witnessed Professor Sanjay Shrivastava highlighting the deeply-rooted tradition of care education within Indian knowledge systems. He underlined the alignment of this tradition with the modern-day emphasis on emotional, intellectual, and physical development of students, as evidenced by the National Education Policy 2020 and its ‘Bal Vatika’ concept in primary education.

The Subject Introduction segment, led by Professor Ashish Shrivastava, underscored the centrality of students in the subject’s discourse, aptly demonstrated by Nel Noddings’ perspectives. This alignment was further reinforced by the National Education Policy 2020, particularly in relation to early childhood care.

Event Secretary Manish Kumar highlighted the contemporary necessity of nurturing ethical values in the 21st century, echoing the essence of Nel Noddings’ Care Ethics. Keynote speaker Dr. Theresa Chi-chen Wang Shei illuminated the practical integration of Care Ethics into curricula through a range of activities, emphasizing adaptability, multidimensional learning, participation-based processes, and inquiry-driven education. His presentation also included the proposal of fostering academic exchanges between Indian students and Taiwan.

The Q&A session, efficiently conducted by Dr. Manisha Rani, fostered engaging discussions. The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. Rashmi Shrivastava, Program Coordinator. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from diverse members of the academic community, both from within India and internationally. Notably, research scholars such as Angad Singh, Shubhra, Alokita Vishal, Partha Sarkar, Sumit Sahu, Sunil Dubey, Ganesh Shukla, Aastik Mishra, and Kanaai Sarkar played an active role in the proceedings. The event concluded with a rendition of the national anthem.
