On September 4, 2023, the Department of Humanities and Languages at Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Bihar, organized a special lecture on the topic of “The Tradition of Vedic Studies and Modern Relevance.” The program was presided over by Prof. Prasoon Datt Singh, the Chairman of the Department of Humanities and Languages. In his opening remarks, Prof. Prasoon Datt Singh emphasized that modern society consistently strives for the establishment of an egalitarian society in its pronouncements. However, the tradition of knowledge and science has its roots deeply embedded in the Vedas, which are comprehensive in their essence, devoid of any restrictions, and embody the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” signifying the unity of all humankind.
The keynote speaker of the event, Dr. Jwalant Kumar Shastri (Renowned Vedic Scholar and Accomplished Acharya, R.R.P.G. College, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh), highlighted that the evolution of all languages in creation traces back to the Vedas. The Vedas serve as the nucleus of all branches of knowledge, and they form the foundation of religion. The youth of today, immersed in the modern system of education, are gradually distancing themselves from their ancient texts. They are missing out on the wisdom, beauty, and delicacy contained within their traditions. To become seekers of knowledge, we must return to our roots, where we will attain spiritual purity. Dr. Jwalant Kumar Shastri elucidated the interconnections between the Vedas, Sanskrit, and science through various examples.
Prof. Aartatran Pal, Chairman, Student Welfare, shed light on the relevance and practicality of the Sanskrit language in his address.
Dr. Shyam Kumar Jha, Chairman of the Sanskrit Department, stated that the tradition of Vedic studies is more than five thousand years old and is rich with the potential for modern research. He emphasized the need to expand our horizons with a contemporary research perspective, especially in conjunction with subjects like science.
Dr. Prachetas, Assistant Professor of Sanskrit at Allahabad University, mentioned that the relevance of the Vedas transcends time. To promote social consciousness, the Vedas must become an integral part of life.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Bimalesh Kumar, Chairman of the English Department at Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Bihar, and the event was efficiently coordinated by Dr. Vishwesh Vagmi, Assistant Professor of Sanskrit at the same institution. During the program, a question and answer session was also conducted, with questions posed by the attending teachers, researchers, and students.
The event was graced by the presence of eminent faculty members from Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Bihar, including Dr. Bablu Pal (Assistant Professor, Sanskrit), Dr. Govind Prasad Verma (Assistant Professor, Hindi), Dr. Amit Ranjan (Assistant Professor, Animal Science), Dr. Shiv Kumar Singh (Assistant Professor, Mathematics), and many others.
